Understanding Test Results

Blood lead levels are measured in micrograms per deciliter (written µg/dL). A microgram is approximately 1/1000 of a grain of sugar and a deciliter is equal to 1/2 cup. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) sets the level of concern at 10 µg/dL. The chart on the following page can help guide you in understanding particular blood lead levels.

0 -14 µg/dL

  1. Have your child tested for lead yearly from birth until 72 months. (Medicaid REQUIRES testing at 12 & 24 months).
  2. Follow the cleaning suggestions and nutrition suggestions in "Protect your Family"
  3. Have your child tested again (venous sample) within 3 months.
  4. If you rent and there is chipping, flaking, or peeling paint in your home; review your rights and file a Notice of Defect.
  5. Contact your local health department or the Coalition for assistance.

15-19 µg/dL

  1. Follow the cleaning suggestions and nutrition suggestions in "Protect Your Family"
  2. Have child tested again (venous sample) within 3 months. If the level persists or increases, proceed according to actions for 20-44µg/dl.
  3. File a Notice of Defect if you are a tenant. Your family may be eligible for Qualified Offer Benefits
  4. Contact your local health department or the Coalition for assistance.

20-44 µg/dL

  1. Have child retested (venous) within 1 month. Have doctor take medical history and administer full medical check-up (including lab work on Hemoglobin and Iron levels).
  2. Have a professional check your home and places where your child spends time (daycare, relatives, neighbors) for lead.
  3. Follow the cleaning suggestions and nutrition suggestions in "Protect Your Family."
  4. File a Notice of Defect if you are a tenant. Your family may be eligible for Qualified Offer Benefits

45-69 µg/dL

  1. Follow all steps for 20 - 44 µg/dl. Contact doctor within 24-48 hours for retest.
  2. Doctor examination should include a complete neurological exam and chelation therapy may be required.

70 µg/dL and over

  1. Contact your doctor for immediate medical treatment on an emergency basis.
  2. Commence Chelation Therapy.
  3. Follow all steps for 45 - 69 µg/dl.
